PARTNERING IN OUR COMMUNITY

Kent Garden Club partners with our community through a variety of outreach projects. Several of these project work directly with non-profits helping their clients discover gardening and creating peaceful spaces for healing and growth. Some honor our military, while others provide civic beautification at local museums and parks. We invite you to see where you can get involved.

  • BLUE STAR MEMORIAL MARKER

This marker was installed at the I-196 Zeeland Rest Stop as part of the KGC 2013 centennial celebration in collaboration with the Holland Garden Club.

Maintained by both clubs in perpetuity, it pays tribute to all who served during World War II, and is a visible reminder to the community of our love of gardening and support for the US Armed Forces.

  • CHILDREN’S ADVOCACY CENTER HEALING GARDEN

KGC volunteers provide garden maintenance for the Healing Garden, a tranquil space designed to harness the therapeutic elements of nature for therapeutic purposes, and a place to celebrate when children graduate from therapy.

  • FREDERIK MEIJER GARDENS AND SCULPTURE PARK PARTNERS

KGC enjoys a rich partnership with the FMG and supports and participates in community-oriented events hosted by the Gardens.

  • GARDENING ON THE GRAND

Committed to civic beautification, KGC has partnered with the Grand Rapids Public Museum to help care for the museum gardens and plant seasonal urns at the entrance to welcome visitors.

  • H.O.P.E. (HELPING OTHER PEOPLE EAT) GARDENS

KGC supports this non-profit organization that serves the Wyoming Public School District by providing children and their families with the skills necessary to grow healthy foods.

Activities include planting seeds, transplanting seedlings, preparing and maintaining gardens, and harvesting and composting.

  • HYSER RIVERS MUSEUM POLLINATOR GARDEN

This multi-phase restoration project is a collaborative effort with the Plainfield Grand Rogue Historical Society to create a pollinator garden on the grounds of the Hyser Rivers Museum.

Currently underway, Phase 1 involves working on design and planning of the garden.

  • MICHIGAN VETERAN HOMES AT GRAND RAPIDS MEMORIAL GARDEN

KGC designed and maintains the Memorial Garden at the entrance that holds the Blue Star and Gold Star Memorial markers.

The garden offers a quiet space for remembrance and respite for residents and visitors, and was a winner of the 2021 Michigan Nursery and Landscape Association Plant Michigan Green Community Landscape Beautification Award.

  • OUR HOPE ASSOCIATION

KGC members transformed a neglected garden area at this women’s residential addiction recovery facility into four vegetable gardens to engage and educate clients and staff on planting, maintaining, and harvesting vegetables.

A flower garden focused on the color purple and attracting butterflies - both a symbol of recovery - was also planted.

  • VIRGIL NISHIMURA WESTDALE MEMORIAL PARK

KGC volunteers work jointly with Cascade Charter Township to redesign, plant, and maintain the gardens in this park located adjacent to the 1898 Town Hall.

We also engage youth in planting annuals each spring.

  • WILCOX PARK DAFFODIL PROJECT

Members planted, and continue to maintain, new beds of daffodils at the entrance to Wilcox Park in memory of Mrs. Florence Foote, President of Kent Garden Club 1917-1919, who was known for her work hybridizing pink daffodils.
